Neonathology

A Neonatology Service in Gatonde district Hospital is medical service that provides comprehensive care for newborn babies, especially those who are premature, have low birth weight, are critically ill, or are born with congenital (birth) abnormalities. It is usually provided in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) by healthcare professionals with specialized training in newborn medicine.

Neonathology

Services provided include:

Care of premature infants (babies born before 37 weeks of pregnancy).
Resuscitation and stabilization of newborns immediately after birth.
Monitoring and treatment using specialized equipment such as incubators, ventilators, and heart and oxygen monitors.
Management of congenital disorders and birth defects.
Nutritional support, including intravenous feeding and breastfeeding support.
Diagnostic services, such as blood tests, imaging, and newborn screening.
Family education and counseling – Guidance on newborn care, feeding, medications, and follow-up needs.
Family education and counseling to help parents understand their baby's condition and participate in care
